As Nigeria gradually approaches the 2027 general elections, I believe there is an important conversation we must begin to have, not necessarily about who should become the next president, governor or legislator, but about the considerations that influence our electoral choices as a people.

For decades, Nigeria's democratic experience has been characterised by intense political competition, shifting alliances, ethnic considerations, religious sentiments and, in some instances, the monetisation of political participation. While these factors do not entirely define our electoral behaviour, their influence on the political process raises fundamental questions about the relationship between democracy, leadership recruitment and national development.

At 66 years of independence, Nigeria has undoubtedly made progress in certain areas. However, our national aspirations remain considerably greater than our achievements. The persistent challenges of poverty, insecurity, unemployment, infrastructural deficiencies and institutional weaknesses continue to raise questions about the quality of political leadership and governance.

It would be intellectually dishonest to attribute Nigeria's developmental challenges exclusively to poor electoral choices. Governance is a complex process influenced by institutional structures, economic conditions, historical circumstances and policy implementation. Nevertheless, the quality of individuals entrusted with public responsibilities remains an important variable in the development equation.

This brings me to a question I consider particularly relevant as we approach 2027: To what extent are Nigerians prepared to assess political candidates on the basis of demonstrated competence, integrity and performance rather than ethnic affiliation, religious identity or unquestioning political loyalty?

The Problem With Unquestioning Political Loyalty

Political loyalty is not inherently undesirable. In established democratic systems, political parties provide platforms through which citizens express ideological preferences, participate in governance and contribute to policy formulation.

The difficulty arises when loyalty becomes detached from critical evaluation.

In Nigeria, political conversations sometimes reveal a troubling tendency to defend individuals or political parties irrespective of their performance. Policies that would ordinarily attract criticism may be defended when introduced by a preferred political party, while similar policies are condemned when proposed by an opposing political group.

This inconsistency raises an important question about whether our political commitments are driven primarily by principles or personalities.

I have always maintained that supporting a political party should not require surrendering one's capacity for independent thought. It should be possible to belong to a political movement, support its broad objectives and still question decisions that appear inconsistent with the public interest.

Indeed, a democracy in which political supporters cannot interrogate their own leaders risks gradually replacing accountability with personal allegiance.

Ethnicity and Religion: Important Identities, but Insufficient Measures of Leadership

Nigeria is an ethnically and religiously diverse society. These identities are deeply embedded in our history, culture and political development.

It is therefore unsurprising that ethnicity and religion sometimes influence political participation. However, their influence becomes problematic when they are treated as substitutes for competence or evidence of good governance.

Sharing an ethnic background with a political candidate does not automatically establish that candidate's ability to manage public institutions. Similarly, religious affiliation provides no guarantee of administrative efficiency, sound economic judgement or commitment to constitutional responsibilities.

This is not an argument for disregarding identity or representation. In a plural society such as Nigeria, inclusion, equity and fair representation remain important considerations in sustaining national cohesion.

Rather, the argument is that representation and competence should not be presented as mutually exclusive.

A political system should be capable of promoting inclusion while also subjecting those seeking public office to rigorous scrutiny.

Competence Must Go Beyond Political Rhetoric

One of the most fascinating aspects of Nigerian electoral politics is the frequency with which ambitious promises dominate political campaigns.

Every election season introduces renewed commitments to economic transformation, improved security, employment generation, infrastructural expansion and better public services.

Yet the critical question is not simply what a candidate promises, but how those promises are intended to be achieved.

In assessing candidates, particular attention should be given to the feasibility of proposed policies, institutional understanding, previous leadership experience and the capacity to translate political objectives into measurable outcomes.

For candidates who have previously occupied public office, their records provide opportunities for examining how they managed responsibilities, responded to challenges and accounted for the resources entrusted to them.

For those seeking office for the first time, their professional experience, policy proposals, leadership history and engagement with public issues may provide useful evidence for public assessment.

Of course, previous experience does not automatically guarantee future success, just as the absence of elected office does not necessarily indicate an absence of leadership capacity.

Competence must therefore be understood as a multidimensional concept involving knowledge, judgement, integrity, communication, administrative capacity and the ability to work effectively within established institutions.

Vote Buying and the Socioeconomic Realities of Electoral Participation

Another important dimension of Nigeria's electoral discourse concerns the relationship between economic vulnerability and political participation.

Discussions about vote buying often concentrate on the conduct of voters without sufficiently examining the socioeconomic conditions within which electoral decisions are made.

Where poverty is widespread and access to basic necessities remains uncertain, financial inducements may carry particular significance for economically disadvantaged citizens.

This does not justify electoral malpractice. Rather, it demonstrates why addressing vote buying requires more than moral condemnation.

Effective responses must include enforcement of electoral laws, voter education, institutional accountability and broader efforts to improve economic security.

Political parties and candidates also have significant responsibilities. The credibility of elections depends partly on their willingness to comply with established rules and refrain from practices that compromise electoral integrity.

Ultimately, electoral participation should reflect the genuine preferences of citizens rather than the coercive influence of financial desperation.

Political Parties and the Recruitment of Leaders

While considerable attention is often directed towards voters, political parties deserve equally serious scrutiny.

Parties occupy a central position in Nigeria's democratic structure because they influence who emerges as a candidate and, consequently, the alternatives presented to the electorate.

Questions surrounding internal democracy, party financing, candidate selection and ideological consistency are therefore fundamental to any meaningful discussion about leadership quality.

Where internal party processes lack transparency, the ability of members to influence leadership recruitment may be constrained.

This is particularly important because democratic accountability should begin within political organisations rather than only after their candidates have assumed public office.

If Nigeria is to strengthen its democratic institutions, political parties must increasingly be examined not merely as vehicles for winning elections but as institutions responsible for developing political ideas, identifying leadership talent and promoting accountable governance.

The Place of Young Nigerians in the 2027 Conversation

As someone who believes strongly in youth development and meaningful political participation, I consider the role of young Nigerians particularly important in this discussion.

Nigeria's young people possess considerable intellectual, creative and entrepreneurial potential. Yet many continue to face challenges associated with employment, education, access to opportunities and economic uncertainty.

Their participation in politics should therefore extend beyond social media debates, political mobilisation and expressions of support for individual candidates.

There is value in examining party manifestos, participating in issue-based discussions, demanding transparent governance and developing an understanding of how public institutions operate.

However, young people should not be treated as a politically homogeneous group. They differ in their experiences, ideological preferences, socioeconomic circumstances and expectations of government.

Recognising these differences is essential to understanding their political participation and ensuring that youth engagement remains meaningful rather than symbolic.

The Media Must Also Examine Its Role

As a student of Mass Communication, I find it necessary to emphasise the responsibility of the media in shaping the quality of political discourse.

The media does not merely transmit political information; it influences the visibility, interpretation and public understanding of political issues.

The rise of digital communication has expanded opportunities for civic participation, but it has equally introduced challenges associated with misinformation, selective reporting, political propaganda and the circulation of unverified claims.

Ahead of 2027, journalists and media organisations must maintain a clear distinction between factual reporting, political commentary and partisan communication.

Public debate is better served when competing policy positions are examined critically, claims are verified and political actors are held to consistent standards.

The credibility of democratic communication depends not only on freedom of expression but also on the quality and reliability of information available to citizens.

Beyond 2027: Democracy Must Deliver Accountability

Perhaps the most important issue in this conversation is the tendency to reduce democratic participation to periodic elections.

Democracy does not begin and end with voting.

Electoral participation is fundamental, but the responsibilities of citizenship and public leadership extend throughout the period between elections.

Public officials should remain accountable for their decisions, legislative responsibilities, financial management and delivery of public services.

Similarly, citizens, civil society organisations, the media and democratic institutions have continuing roles in scrutinising governance and promoting transparency.

It is equally important to recognise that a country's development cannot depend solely on the personal qualities of individual leaders. Strong institutions, effective laws, transparent administrative systems and consistent policy implementation are indispensable to sustainable progress.

Even individuals with considerable leadership experience may struggle to deliver meaningful outcomes where institutions are weak or systems of accountability are ineffective.

Consequently, the conversation ahead of 2027 must extend beyond personalities to include the institutional conditions necessary for effective governance.

Conclusion: A Question Worth Asking

As Nigeria prepares for the 2027 general elections, I believe we have another opportunity to reflect on the relationship between our political choices and the quality of governance we expect.

This reflection should not be approached as an argument against any political party, candidate, region or religious group. Rather, it should encourage a more informed national discussion about the standards by which political leadership is assessed.

Ethnic identity, religious affiliation and party membership are legitimate dimensions of individual and collective political life. However, none should place a candidate beyond public scrutiny.

The same standard of accountability should apply to incumbents, opposition candidates and emerging political actors.

As citizens, we should be interested not only in the promises presented during campaigns but also in the evidence supporting those promises, the practicality of proposed policies and the mechanisms through which elected officials can be held accountable.

The quality of democracy is reflected not simply in the frequency of elections, but in the strength of its institutions, the freedom of its citizens and the accountability of those entrusted with public authority.

As 2027 approaches, the question is therefore not merely who will emerge victorious at the polls.

It is whether our electoral conversations will give sufficient attention to competence, integrity, policy and performance, and whether those considerations will remain important after the elections have concluded.

Nigeria's democratic future deserves that level of seriousness.

And perhaps the most important question every aspiring political leader should be prepared to answer is this: Beyond winning an election, what evidence-based and achievable contribution do you intend to make to the lives of the people you seek to govern?
